Profile!

Hey everyone - I'm Jackie, and I am a member of Polytechnic School's Global Scholars cohort for the class of 2022!

A little bit about me...

Languages:

An intermediate Spanish speaker and a (very) beginner Latin learner.

GOA or GIP Courses:

GOA's Introduction to investing (highly recommend), Contemporary Ethical Issues, and hoping to take Economics, Foreign Affairs, and Globalization and Human Rights.

On-Going Service Projects:

As a Passport Member* of American Women for International Understanding (AWIU), I have completed a few global service projects. We raised $11,600 during the summer of 2020 for Ivory Coast Mothers and Children (ICMC) which is a non-profit in the Ivory Coast that provides medical care for rural towns. The money went towards building a second clinic that was dedicated to caring for the children of surrounding villages, specifically administering essential vaccines. Most recently, however, Passport members have been reading to orphaned children in rural Nepal who reside and study at the Modern Model Residential School (MMRS). We read children's books via Zoom to aid their English language studies. A truly rewarding experience!

* A Passport Member is a junior, non-paying member of AWIU. The program focuses on mirroring AWIU's goals by arranging rewarding, philanthropic opportunities specifically for high school and college students.

On a local level, I am a member of the National Charity League's Pasadena Chapter, which provides local philanthropic opportunities. My sisters and I love making dinners for the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House, and Food Forward quickly became another favorite philanthropy!

Intended Capstone Project:

Given that I am currently very active with the Modern Model Residential School, I would love to center my capstone project around the students there. Shomi and Prakash, a married couple and co-principles, are always thrilled to speak about the school and the children, which will work out well! And, perhaps I will apply for one of the Global Scholars' grants.
